    Title:
    BlackBerry Z10 upgrade
    Content:

Lots of people have been asking, and we have an answer for you.

Unfortunately, the most recent maintenance release issued by BlackBerry (10.0.10.85) will not be made available to SaskTel BlackBerry Z10 customers. The reason SaskTel has chosen not to provide this software update to our customers is that it will have a negative impact on the roaming capabilities of SaskTel issued Z10 devices. The next BlackBerry Z10 upgrade for SaskTel customers is expected to be available in late April. In working with BlackBerry, we have confirmed that the next release will not have any negative impacts to our customers. This maintenance release offered by BlackBerry focuses primarily on addressing minor fixes since the Z10 launch. Rest assured that SaskTel Z10 customers will still enjoy all the great features of the device.

      Hi

You just sent me yet another version of this response.

The problem is you aren't listening to what your customers are saying. This is NOT a minor fix. Aside from significantly enhancing battery performance (which is not minor in the least), Blackberry is issuing a flood of  very significant apps in advance of its US launch next week and NONE OF THEM can be uploaded by your Z10 customers because we do not have the 10.0.10.85 OS. Again this is not minor. It also means that we cannot "still enjoy all the great features of this device" despite what you tell us because our AppWorlds are effectively closed to new apps until late April.

I think most of us would appreciate an answer to what the "roaming problems" are. If we knew what they were we could make an informed judgment about your decision.

Also, why do Z10 users of other carriers in this province not have these "roaming problems?" What is it about Sasktel that makes it different? What is unique to your network? Telus uses your towers yet they still have the update.  Did you push Blackberry hard enough for a solution? Did your competitors push harder? You may well have sensible reasons but you have to tell us what they are. Simply saying we are not making it available is a huge communications fail and your lack of transparency  is undermining your customers faith in your ability to deliver a competitve product. How many other upgrades are we going to be denied in the future because you cannot work out a fix with Blackberry in a timely fashion?

So, more information required from Sasktel on this. "Wait until late April" is not good enough.

If you decide not to disclose to  your paying customers the detailed reasons for this decision then  I suggest you waive the $50 unlocking fee for all Z10 users and let us put in another carrier's unregistered  SIM card, get the update and take our chances with the "roaming problems."

      Hi Martin,

Thank you for posting your concerns with regards to the 10.0.10.85 update on the BlackBerry Z10.  Your concerns are certainly valid, and we appreciate your feedback.

It is true that this update did not pass the Technical Approval process to be released to SaskTel customers.  Without getting too long-winded and technical, the piece that it broke was what allows SaskTel customers to roam anywhere in the world where SaskTel does not have a direct roaming agreement with the local carrier (instead, we rely on a 3rd-party relationship that allows us to roam using their roaming agreements).  The feature that allows this, is a technical requirement from SaskTel.  This issue has been identified and will be fixed in the next OS update.  This technical issue is present in other carriers versions of the OS update as well, however, they do not have that same technical requirement for that feature.  Our goal is to ensure a consistent roaming experience for all of our customers.  You can imagine the frustration a customer might experience if they visited a country one month ago and had great service, only to visit again tomorrow and find out that their phone no longer works there.

The fixes offered in this update in many cases, are minor and situational, meaning that while some battery efficiencies may be found in some use cases, many others will not experience the same.  It is not guaranteed to extend battery life for all customers.

Hopefully that provides some insight into the reason to not approve the update.

That said, the feedback you and others have provided is very valuable.  Because of this, we will re-initiate the testing on this update immediately and re-look at the decision to release this update.  While I certainly can not promise that this will be made available, we will do everything to ensure the decision made is the one that is most beneficial, and least impactful, to our customers.

I hope this helps to clear up the situation as it currently stands.  I will attempt to provide an update next week on our progress.

      Thank you,

      Shane C.

      Hi everyone,

Just to update, we are a couple weeks away from the next available update for BlackBerry 10.  It was delayed slightly by BlackBerry in order to align with the BlackBerry Q10 launch.  So expect the next update in early May.

And just to clarify, the next update that will be released is not just the 10.0.10.85 release that was not approved previously.  This is the next version which includes all the 10.0.10.85 patches and features, in addition to a number of new items.

If there are any questions, please feel free to reply or inbox me!

Martin is right on the money with his comments. His frustrations are being experienced by virtulally all the BB 10 communitity that is stuck with this unfortunate experience with SaskTel. Does this mean that the new Q10 will not be released here with the full version of 10.1 that will be going to all the other carriers?

      Hi Barry,

Yes, we certainly understand this has been frustrating for some customers.  And the delays are frustrating for us all.  It was not an ideal experience for SaskTel or our customers.

To answer your question, yes, the BlackBerry Q10 is launching with version 10.1(c) of the BB10 OS.  The BlackBerry Z10 will get version 10.1(d) in approximately a week and a half when it is released to all carriers.

Thank you for sticking it out and we apologize for the delays.

"The BlackBerry Z10 will get version 10.1(d) in approximately a week and a half when it is released to all carriers."

Does this mean one and one half a weeks from now or one and a half weeks after version 10.1(d) is released to everyone else. By the way thanks for the quick response.

      Hi Barry,

Approximately one and a half weeks from now.  All carriers will get it at the same time.

      Thanks!
